  • Why “SlingShot”?

"As Goliath moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck Goliath on the forehead... So David triumphed over Goliath with a sling and a stone" (1Sam 17:48-50). Like David, I want to aim right between the eyes of the giants that face this generation.

Crisis Chaplaincy Training

I am currently in Houston going through a Chaplaincy Crisis Certification training class. I first heard about this concept about two years ago. Rick Joyner wrote about the value of this training in retrospect of Hurricane Katrina. He and his staff had gone through this training, and they had also taken a FEMA crisis intervention class as well.

The primary reason is that the church might have good intentions, but we can’t go behind the lines if we don’t have the credentials. Since 911 this kind of training has sprung up on a wide scale. The particular association that I am going through is based in Harris County in conjunction with Dr. Haynes expertise and training. Check out the site: faith based counseling.

The vision:

The founders and staff of The Faith Based Counselor Training Institute believe that true Kingdom Ministry should be in the hands of all of God’s people. The central purpose of FBCTI is to be a recognizable force in mobilizing the ‘faith community’ on a grass root level to respond correctly to hurting people. Each instructor has personally experienced the agony of defeat and the joy of restoration. Further, we believe that the people of God are emerging on their finest hour and desperately need to be educated and given the practical training necessary to effectively bring freedom to those who are trapped in negative consequence behavior and life controlling issues.

The Foundations/Beginnings of Faith Based Training:

Following the passage of House Bill 2481 by the Texas Legislature in 1997, Paul Carlin requested the assistance of seasoned pastoral and professional counselors, Michael K. Haynes, Ph.D. and Ken Dodson, LPC., to formulate the curriculum and structure for The Therapon Institute. Dr. Haynes served as Therapon’s President for one year. After resigning that position, on February 1, 1998, Dr. Haynes and his wife Marj, received a Texas corporate charter for The Faith-Based Counselor Training Institute, Inc. With the passage of House Bill 2481 the Texas legislature opened the doors for the “faith community” to be able to acquire a State recognized counselor certification through accreditation by a well-credentialed, private sector religious training entity. Since that time, the faith-based initiatives have gone nationwide with the enormous mission of helping people to experience a change of heart, consequently a change of life.

FBCTI is one of America’s leading forerunners in Faith Based Counselor Certification Training. After completing the FBCTI courses, Bill Yeary established The International Institute of Faith Based Counseling. In like manner, following the FBCTI basic training Gene Grounds began the Victim Chaplain’s and Counselor Association of America. Other FBCTI graduates who have applied their training are Bob and Ann Wilson who founded The Meadows House, a residential Faith Based Drug and Alcohol facility. Dr. Haynes wrote and developed the early Victim Relief curriculum as well as The Meadows House Recovery Manual and the Wilson’s book entitled “Enablers Can Kill Addicts.” God has uniquely blessed The Faith Based Counselor Training Institute, Inc. to be able to help so many other training entities to become established in order to advance the Kingdom and bless hurting people.

The Faith Based Counselor Training Institute has trained and certified over 7,000 people in all of its curriculums since its beginning. As of 2007 we have students in all 50 states and 7 foreign countries through our distance learning program.

3 Questions:

1. When a Critical Incident or Disaster occurs in your community does your church have members who are Trained, Credentialed and Positioned to minister to the unique needs of the victims?

2. Does your local Police, Fire, and Emergency Medical Service personnel who work behind the scenes of a tragedy know that your church is capable of offering crisis intervention in the lives of those who are hurting?

3. Is your church prepared to deploy a Crisis Chaplaincy Team to the scene of a crime or accident to minister to the victims when emergency service personnel leave?

  1. I noticed that you support Faith Based Counselor Training Institute (FBCTI). I would like to let you know that my experience with FBCTI has been extremely disappointing. They have not kept to their agreement . I have found that others have had problems with FBCTI also, check the Better Bussiness Bureau site. I hope that you will reconsider your bussiness relationship with FBCTI.

    Thanks,

    Gary Killian

  2. I heard Dr. Haynes speak at a Grief Dinner at First Baptist Houston. His sacrifce and that of his wife in spending a whole year at Ground Zero shows they are doing God’s work. I don’t know what “business problem” or “broken promises” you could have had with them. I wish you had been specific. Were you expecting him to find you a job in this field and were disappointed? Did you give them a chance to resolve your misunderstanding? I would be shocked to discover that they were dishonest in any way. As for me, I used to be a FEMA Housing Inspector and I have seen so much pain, in the workers who flood in help disaster victims and the victims themselves. I know that this ministry is good from personal experience.
I was an encourager who suddenly found myself faced with a murdered family member and needed crisis counseling myself, I turned to them.

I hope you will have forgiveness and peace about your problem.
